Broadband types explained
Not all broadband is the same. Here's what the terminology actually means for your connection.
Full Fibre (FTTP)
Fibre optic cable runs all the way to your property. Symmetrical speeds up to 1,000 Mbps. Best for 4K streaming, gaming, and large households. Available to approximately 62% of UK premises (and growing). Providers: BT, Sky, Vodafone, Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, Gigaclear.
Fibre-to-Cabinet (FTTC)
Fibre runs to the street cabinet, copper phone line covers the final few hundred metres. Speeds of 30–80 Mbps depending on distance from the cabinet. Covers roughly 96% of the UK. Widely available from all major providers.
Cable (Virgin Media)
Uses coaxial cable rather than phone lines. Speeds up to 1,130 Mbps in some areas. Available to about 52% of UK homes. Only available from Virgin Media, but competitive pricing on bundles with TV and phone.
5G Home Broadband
Delivered over the mobile network, no landline required. Speeds vary by signal strength (typically 100–300 Mbps). Low latency, quick setup. Available from Three, EE, and Vodafone where 5G coverage is good. Perfect for renters and short contracts.

Do I need a landline for broadband?
For FTTC (fibre-to-cabinet) broadband, yes — the signal travels over the copper phone line, so line rental is included in the contract price. Full fibre (FTTP), cable (Virgin Media), and 5G home broadband don't require a landline at all. If you're switching to full fibre, you can cancel your phone line entirely.
